NORTH YORKSHIRES champion ice cream maker David Otterburn is celebrating after scooping a hat-trick of awards at the UK's national ice cream competition.

David Otterburn, whose family run Ryeburn of Helmsley, was awarded the Janet Barker Cup in the open class for his Nutella ice cream at The National Ice Cream Competition run by The Ice Cream Alliance. David also delighted judges with his cherry and raspberry flavours which both picked up a trophy for best in class.

David, who has been making ice cream for more than 20 years, was delighted with his success at the competition: I love ice cream and will keep on tasting and testing a flavour until it is perfect.

As former dairy farmers, we really know our ingredients and will always make that extra effort to get the best flavour.

Hand-picked raspberries from local producers at Sinnington provided the tantalising flavour of the raspberry sorbet which melted the judges hearts at the competition.

Raspberry sorbet is just one of Davids award-winning flavours to delight customers at the ice cream parlour in Helmsley. Other flavours include Orange Marmalade, Rhubarb, Custard and Crumble, Liquorice and Fruits of the Forest.

His ice creams, which are made in small batches in a tiny unit just behind the parlour at Church Farm, Cleveland Way, Helmsley, have also won awards for the best in show and best Yorkshire dairy product at the Yorkshire Show this year as well as the first Prince of Wales Award for outstanding contribution to dairy products.
Although we have entered the Ice Cream Awards every year for the past 25 years and won a few trophies and medals in the past, it has been seven years since our last success. To achieve this degree of recognition is brilliant.

Zelica Carr Chief Executive Officer of The Ice Cream Alliance, which represents more than 650 ice cream makers and businesses in Great Britain and Ireland, said: Every year David works harder than ever to perfect his entries and this years' success shows that his ice creams are exceptional.

He was up against extremely strong competition to win three awards is outstanding.
